Press Release-Indian Naval Ship Darshak visits Myanmar (12 May 2015)

          The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Darshak will pay a goodwill visit to Thilawa Port, Yangon from 11-14 May, 2015. INS Darshak has been built in India as a specialized vessel for undertaking hydrographic survey and is fitted with state-of-the-art equipment for recording depth of water to establish a safe passage for the marine vessels. INS Darshak is commanded by Cdr Amol G Merwade with 180 officers and sailors.

          The word Darshak means ‘Guide’ and true to its name, INS Darshak has been playing a vital role in establishing safe paths from hidden underwater dangers for the mariner.  

          Over the last two months, INS Darshak has been working with Myanmar Navy in undertaking the first ever joint hydrographic survey off Sittwe harbor. This landmark joint survey of Indian and Myanmar Navy was successfully completed on 9th May, 2015. The joint survey is expected to provide detailed information of Sittwe harbor which will assist in enhancing safety of the vessels that would be operating in the Sittwe port being upgraded by India. The finding of the joint survey “fair sheet” will be formally handed over to Myanmar side on 13th May, 2015 in Nay Pyi Taw by Ambassador of India H.E. Gautam Mukhopadhaya. Rear Admiral K.M. Nair of Indian Navy who is the Joint Chief Hydrographer would also be attending the handing over ceremony.

          The first ever joint hydrographic survey in Myanmar water by the Indian and Myanmar Navy demonstrates the deep and binding ties of friendship, respect for professionalism and enhanced mutual trust between the two navies as important maritime neighbours in Indian Ocean Region.    

          Embassy of India and Commanding Officer of INS Darshak would be hosting a Deck Reception on 12th May, 2015 at 1830 hrs during which Myanmar dignitaries, high ranking Myanmar armed forces personnel, diplomatic community and prominent locals are expected to attend the reception.
