Press Release-GOI support for training in English Language for Law Enforcement Officers

Government of India support for training in English Language for Law Enforcement Officers at MICELT, Yangon

          The Embassy of India is pleased to announce the successful completion of English language training for Myanmar Law Enforcement Officers (Police Officers) at Myanmar​-​India Centre for English Language Training (MICELT) at Yangon University.  To mark the Occasion, a Closing Ceremony/Reception, was held today at the Chancery.

          MICELT was set up with technical and financial assistance from India, under the Initiative for Asian Integration (IAI) programme in 2009 at Yangon University, with an aim of providing a permanent venue for teaching and raising the general level of proficiency in English language in Myanmar. MICELT conducts short term courses on English proficiency, which are popular amongst Government officials, journalists, entrepreneurs and academia.

          30 Myanmar Law Enforcement Officers were selected on the basis of written and viva tests to undertake the current course. ​As part of the Programme, the officers were imparted training to enhance their English language proficiency to be better  ​equipped for discharging their duties domestically, and in their engagements with foreign counterparts.

          The initiative was being financed by the Government of India under the IAI-NDG (Initiative for ASEAN Integration/ Narrowing Development Gap) Division of ASEAN Secretariat, SOMTC (Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime) for CLMV (Cambodia, Lao DPR, Myanmar, Vietnam) Countries.

          The 3-month programme was conducted by Aptech which runs a successful training academy in Yangon conducting popular courses in Computer Science and English​ language. It has supported MICELT for this Programme with its faculty and innovative methods of teaching, including the use audio-visual techniques to make the Programme interesting and different.

          The project also involved supply of teaching aids to MICELT as part of Government of India’s commitment to ​ strengthen Institutional​ capacity and develop human resources in Myanmar to meet the future development challenges.

          Speaking on the Occasion, Police Major General Zaw Win emphasized the need of such courses in capacity building and thanked the Government of India for its support. The Ambassador of India to Myanmar, Mr. Gautam Mukhopadhaya, said that the India attaches great importance to its ties with Myanmar and is happy to share its experience and expertise with its valued neighbour. He said that India is currently extending financial and technical assistance to Myanmar, for various projects, which are at present valued over US$ 1.7 Billion.
