Press Release on the  Inauguration of the Liaison Office of the

Embassy of India in Nay Pyi Taw

1. H.E. Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Foreign Secretary inaugurated the Liaison Office of the Embassy of India on 5 October 2020. H.E. U SoeHan, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic ofthe Union of Myanmar also graced the occasion along with officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador of India to Myanmar, H.E. ShriSaurabh Kumar was also present.

2. The idea of a Liaison Office first emerged during Hon’ble President of India, H.E. Shri Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to Myanmar on 10 14 December 2018. This was also reflected in the India Myanmar JointStatement issued at the end of the visit as “ With this in view, the Indianside informed that, as a preparatory step to relocation of its Embassy tothe capital, India intended to set up an Interim Liaison Office in Nay PyiTaw as soon as discussions on the formalities of opening the office andleasi ng property were completed with the Myanmar authorities TheLiaison Office started functioning in Nay Pyi Taw w.e.f. 1st October, 2019.

3. Currently headed by Ms. Amrita Banerjee, t he Liaison Office issituated at Padamyar 1 Thazin Villa, Park Royal Nay Pyi Taw, Jade VillaNo. 13/14, Hotel zone, Dekhina Thiri Tsp, Nay Pyi Taw.
