The Embassy of India, Yangon is organizing the ‘Bamboo Craft Exhibition’ at the National Museum, Yangon from 16 to 18 March, 2017 (10:00 AM – 5:00 PM).  A three-member team led by Shri Mutua Bahadur, Academy award winner, an expert of Fine Arts and prominent member of Archaeological Survey of India from Manipur, India will display the exhibits on bamboo craft during the exhibition.He is the author of the recently published book titled ‘Art of Bamboo’ which was released by Shri Okram Ibobi, Chief Minister of Manipur, at Sedona Hotel, Mandalay, Myanmar on 30 May 2013. Shri Mutua Bahadur is credited with books that include The Art of Textiles, Traditional Textiles of Manipur, Tribal Hand Woven Fabrics of Manipur, Cane and Bamboo Crafts of Manipur, Potteries of Manipur, among many others.Extensive use of wood over the ages for furniture and other products has challenged the environment raising questions on sustainable extraction. Accordingly, forest cover has been ever receding. This increasing need for wood has been beautifully supplemented by bamboo. The eco-friendly products made of bamboo are light in weight and have their own style and elegance. These products have a high life-span with minimum maintenance and are on par with wood, if not better in some respects. Strips of bamboo are extensively used to manufacture different utility and decorative items. Some bamboo products are sofa sets, mats, basketry, trays, chairs, tables, flower vases, ashtray and other decorative and utility articles. Bamboo is also used for housing, fencing and even clothing.  Bamboo craft is very popularly used in both India and Myanmar and can be developed commercially as an environment friendly alternative to the use of forest wood.  Go Green!
