Government of India with an objective to strengthen the commercial ties with Myanmar has launched India-Myanmar Direct Shipping Service between the two countries to be operated by Shipping Corporation of India called “SCI-KAMAL”. It is a conscious attempt by the Government of India to enhance friendly relations as part of its Look East policy and goes beyond mere economic interests. The inaugural vessel was flagged off at container terminal of Chennai Port on October 3, 2014 and has arrived at Lanpyi Terminal, Bo Aung Kyaw Port in Yangon on October 8, 2014.

The direct liner service would operate as a fortnightly service and will connect the port of Chennai-Krishnapatnam-Yangon-Colombo. It will enable the goods to reach these destinations quicker and at a reduced cost generating immense opportunities for the business community. The service would not only reinvigorate the historical ties but also help in rediscovering and tapping the immense potential that exists.
